Announced on April 27, 2005, the Nokia Nseries N70 phone just starts shipping worldwide. Nokia must have employed new designers for their smartphones because the Series 60 range of phones completely changed its look and feel. In contrast to older S60 smartphones with colourful housings and 'twisted' keypads, all new Series 60 devices look very stylish, subtle and professional.

And the N70 is no exception to this rule.

Look and feelIt's one of those phones that look even better in reality than on pictures. The silver plastic front part with a brushed aluminium frame surrounding the display and silver, blue-backlit keypad perfectly match the black body of the phone and make it look really stylish and professional. The build quality makes a very good impression; the phone feels sturdy and the only weaker element seems to be the sliding camera cover which looks and operates very nicely but feels a little bit too 'plasticy'. However, during several days of tests I didn't notice any squeaking sounds.

The keypad has traditional layout and very nice blue backlight. Tactile feedback is good but the keys are slightly too little for my fingers (however there's simply no space for bigger keys on such a small phone). 5-way navigation key is a little bit raised and thus conveniently separated from the other keys. The keyboard also contains a special "Media key" which can be assigned to any built-in or 3rd party application and allows launching it anytime with just one press.

The size and weight of the N70 are slightly smaller than 6680 or 6670. N70 weighs 126 g and measures 108.8 x 53 x 21.8 mm, which makes it the smallest Series 60 based 3G smartphone.

Hardware - what's new and hot

The most important advantage of the N70 is the amount of RAM memory. RAM is the operating memory used for program execution. The simple rule is: the more, the better. Previous Series 60 smartphones suffered from very small amount of RAM available for 3rd party applications, usually less than 8 MB, with the only exceptions being the N-Gage series offering about 11 MB of free RAM memory and the new N90 having almost 21 MB free RAM. If you have more operating memory you can not only use more applications at the same time but you can also run more advanced software, open larger documents, bigger pictures, use more detailed maps in a GPS navigation program and so on. The great news is that N70 has..... 32 MB of free RAM, the most used in a Symbian OS device so far; even Nokia 9500 Communicator has less!

The N70 also has 20 MB of internal storage memory (Flash memory, disk C:) and allows storage expansion using DV RS-MMC cards (64 megabyte card with pre-installed software is included with the phone). The CPU speed is the same as of 6630, 6680 and N90 - 220 MHz - and it's the fastest CPU used in Symbian OS smartphones up to date. The overall performance of the N70 seems to be the same as of 6680, with the exception that you can now run much more concurrent applications and quickly switch between them.

Even though not equipped with an autofocusing Carl Zeiss lens like the N90, the 2 megapixel (1600 x 1200 pixels) camera of the N70 still provides fairly good quality, similiar to what you get with the 6680, 20x digital zoom and a LED flash. There is also a second VGA resolution (640x480 pixels) camera with 2x ditital zoom on the front used for video calls and self-portraits. The phone has a dedicated shutter button and a slide/cover automatically activating the camera. The built-in light sensor automatically fires the flash in poor lighting conditions.

N70 is a stereo phone supporting MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and RealAudio. The loudspeaker (located on top) produces clear and very loud sound. The phone comes with Nokia HS-3 stereo headset which also serves as an antenna for stereo Visual FM radio. Reception and playback quality are very good.

Nokia N70 is a dual mode WCDMA (2100 MHz) / triband GSM (900/1800/1900 MHz) smartphone. The phone supports video calls and video sharing and its Internet connection speed reaches 384 kbps in UMTS networks and 236,8 kbps in EDGE networks. Full speed USB 2.0 port and Bluetooth provide fast and stable connectivity.

The phone uses the BL-5C Li-Ion battery and provides similiar standby time as the 6680.

Software

The menu looks and works like in all recent Series 60 phones. The standby screen supports the "Active standby" function (icons providing quick access to the most frequently used applications and "Today screen" like information about current Calendar entries and To-Do's). As already mentioned, the new special "Media" key can be assigned to any built-in or 3rd party application providing one-touch access to your most frequently used program.

Built-in software includes Audio Recorder, Converter, To-do, Calculator, Notes, File Manager, Data Transfer, Sync, Device and Connection manager, Instant Messenger, Tutorial, Music Player, Web browser, Clock, Gallery, Camera application, Movie director, Real Player, Image Print, Visual Radio, Calendar, Contacts, Messaging and games (Card Deck, Snakes and 3D Snowboard).
The 64 MB DV RS-MMC card comes with the following applications preinstalled: QuickOffice (QuickWord, QuickSheet, QuickPoint), Symantec Security (anti-virus and firewall software), Adobe PDF reader, Info Print (printing PIM data via Bluetooth on compatible printers), Wireless Keyboard control, Lifeblog client, Catalogs, Opera browser and Kodak Mobile client.

The RealPlayer media player supports video playback in MPEG4 format, plus audio in a choice of formats including MP3, AAC, Real Audio, WAV and Nokia Ring Tones. The Visual Radio lets you listen to songs from radio stations, with information about the song and artist. A stereo headset is supplied as part of the sales package.

The N70 has the full range of 3G capabilities, including video calling, video downloads and video/music streaming. A second VGA resolution camera is used for making video calls. Data transfer via 3G is very fast, opening up the possibility of media streaming and music or video downloads. The display on the N70 is very good with 262k colours and a bright active matrix display. It's a great multimedia device.

Nokia N70 is the smallest and lightest Symbian OS 3G smartphone released up to date. It looks very stylish and professional and provides all the latest technologies and functions you would expect from a smartphone: data transmission with UMTS and EDGE speeds, 2 Megapixel camera, high quality 65k colors display, stereo playback and FM radio. Ever dropped your cell phone in the sinkDid you ever leave it in your pocket and run it through the washer? It usually means you have to replace your phone, but sometimes if you're fast you can save the phone.

1. Remove the Battery. This is one of the most important steps. Don't take time to think about it, electricity and water do not mix. Cutting power to your phone is a crucial first step in saving it.

2. Dry your Phone. Obviously you need to remove as much of the water as soon as you can to prevent it from getting into the phone. Use a towel or a paper towel to remove as much of the water as possible.

3. Soak in Alcohol. Alcohol is hygroscopic (attracts water), it will dissolve all the water in the phone, which will then pour out of the phone with the alcohol. Any remaining alcohol will evaporate. Alcohol will not harm your phone but may mess up glue (from stickers and the like). Use 95% alcohol, not the regular 70% rubbing type. Do it outside!. If you use alcohol, do not follow the rest of the advice here, instead leave your phone outside for a day or two to dry.

4. Allow the phone to dry. Since you do not want to ruin your phone or lose all the numbers in your phone book, you need to allow the phone to dry. Don't try putting the battery back on to see if it works as this would risk damaging the phone with a short circuit. Leaving your phone in a bowl of dry rice will help to expedite moisture evaporation.

5. Heat your Phone. Apply enough heat to your phone to cause the water to evaporate without waterlogging your digital screen. One of the best things you can do to save a cell phone is to set it on the back of your computer monitor or TV screen over the heat vents. This is usually the perfect amount of heat to fix your phone. The convection action of the heat vents will help carry away the moisture in your phone. Leave the phone on the heat for at least 2-3 days. Another option is to leave it overnight in the oven on warm (make sure to take off the battery first).

6. Test your Phone. After you have waited 3 days, make sure everything is clean and dry looking and re-attach the battery to the phone and see if it works. If your phone does not work repeat step 4. If it still won't work, try taking your cell phone to an authorized dealer. Sometimes they can fix it.

Tips :

* Don't put the battery on for at least 3 days or longer if your digital screen is foggy.* Place a piece of satin finish scotch tape over your water damage sticker before you drop your cell phone in the water to prevent the water damage sticker from voiding your warranty. This sticker can usually be found under your battery. It's a small round white sticker, possibly with dots on it. If this sticker gets wet it changes color and your phone is marked for water damage.* Remove the tape if you ever have to return your phone for repairs or warranty. (See the note in the 'Warnings' section about doing this!)* The best way to dry out your phone is to place it in front of an air conditioner or air conditioning vent. Cold air won't damage your phone (hot air can warp or in extreme cases even melt plastic), and air from an air conditioner is dry, and so will evaporate water faster than you might think (which is why a car air conditioner will de-mist the windshield so effectively, even if the engine hasn't warmed up yet). Warm air from a reverse-cycle air conditioner works even better, of course. If you dry your phone in this way overnight it should be fine by the morning.* Use a hairdryer set on warm; it won't melt your head so your phone should be safe.* Use a food dehydrator.* Use the oven on the warm setting (make sure to take out the battery)

Warnings :

* Don't heat the battery or it could leak acid. If you use an oven or hairdryer, make sure to remove the battery first.* If you use alcohol make sure to do so outside, and do not apply heat in any form, not even the gentle heat of a monitor. Do not hook up the bettery till the alcohol smell dissipates.* Do not apply heat to your phone other than mentioned above. You don't want to melt or burn your phone.* Warranty fraud is naughty! If you dropped your phone in the can with your other 'droppings'--are you really going to send it in for a warranty tech to have to open? Yuck!* FYI, Most modern phones have more than one liquid damage indicator on them, only one visible to you (and sales/technician agents), and chances are, if the sticker under the battery is triggered (or would be, with the scotch tape trick), then the odds are that the internal stickers you can't access are tripped as well. This will still result in you paying a voided-warranty fee in the long run, and it may be best to just learn from your mistake (and not make it more financially severe!).* Even if all these steps are followed, minerals dissolved in the water can precipitate on solder and component pins, causing corrosion or shorting. Components pins are packed so closely together in a modern cell phone that even a small encrustation can create a short, rendering the phone inoperable .

Blacklisted or Barred Handsets

What is it all aboutA phone may be blacklisted (or barred) for many different reasons, but the most common reason is that it has been reported either lost or stolen! It is only the networks (Orange, T-Mobile, O2, Vodafone etc) that have the facility to blacklist a handset.
If you are unfortunate enough to either lose or even worse have your phone stolen you should report it to your service provider (your network) immediately! Your service provider can then blacklist the handset so that it can no longer be used to make or receive any calls. The networks do this by adding your phones serial number onto a national blacklist database (Central Equipment Identity Register). Effectively the handset becomes absolutely useless and the thief is in possession of a pretty paper weight! -))

So How Does Blacklisting WorkEvery mobile phone has a unique serial number. This serial number is called the IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity). It can normally be found underneath the phones battery and it is 15 digits long.
Now each time you switch your phone on or attempt to make a call the network systems check the IMEI number of the handset you are using. At this point the IMEI number of your handset is cross referenced with the Central Equipment Identity Register. If the IMEI number of your handset is on the CEIR then the network will either

1) Refuse to send a signal to your phone (No signal strength at all)

2) OR WILL supply a signal but will not allow any outgoing or incoming calls.

If your IMEI number is on the CEIR your handset is blacklisted and therefore useless. By spreading the word that stolen handsets will not work it is hoped that street crime can be reduced!

How to Check If Your Phone is Blacklisted!!Different networks blacklist handsets in different ways

Orange & O2 If you place an active orange or O2 sim into a blacklisted handset you phone will not show any signal strength at all! If the handset is a Nokia then a SIM card registration failed message will also be displayed. If your handset is an Ericsson then an Invalid Mobile messagewill be displayed. For most other manufacturers the handset will simply show no signal!
Vodafone & T-MobileIf you place an active Vodafone or T-Mobile sim into a blacklisted handset, the phone will appear to function perfectly UNTIL you try to make an outgoing call. When you try to call out from the handset you will hear a sequence of beeps and then the call will be dropped!!

Unlocking & Blacklisting, is there any Connection

The answer is that there used to be a connection before O2 and Vodafone started blacklisting handsets! Orange and T-Mobile have been blacklisting handsets for a long time (It is only recently that O2 and Vodafone also started blacklisting handsets).
NB Orange & T-Mobile always lock their handsets!(e.g. an Orange handset will only accept an Orange sim and will not accept an O2, Voda or T-Mobile sim)
So if you reported your Orange or T-Mobile handset missing to your network it became barredblacklisted! BUT it was only barred on your home network. Therefore unlocking the barred handset would enable it to work on every network except the one it was originally locked too! Therefore the phone still had some commercial value, as it would function on at least 3 out of the 4 networks.
It wasn't long before Orange and T-Mobile began to combine their individual blacklist databases. Therefore a phone barred on Orange was also barred on T-Mobile and vice versa. Even at this point the barred handset could be unlocked and used but only on 2 out of a possible 4 networks (O2 & Vodafone).

The government eventually stepped in and forced O2 and Vodafone to update their systems and introduced the CEIR. Now that all the networks share a central blacklist database, even if a barred handset is unlocked it still remains useless on ALL UK networks!

How Do Criminals Get Around The Blacklisting SchemeCEIR

So now that handsets are blacklisted on all networks what do the criminals do to get around this They find ways to change handset IMEI numbers! Amazingly it is only recently that the alteringchanging of IMEI numbers has become illegal! Home Secretary David Blunkett introduced a new law making re-programming IMEI numbers punishable by up to five years in jail. View Download the Mobile Phones (Reprogramming) Act 2002 here! This new law became active on the 4th October 2002 . (this new law does not effect handset unlocking).
Never the less it is possible to change IMEI numbers on certain handsets. So if an individual obtains a blacklisted handset, they can change the IMEI number and the handset will then work again!!
In my opinion the responsibility now lies with the handset manufactures. They need to make it as difficult as possible to change IMEI numbers. To be fair some manufactures are doing their bit (but some are not!). For example Nokia's older DCT 3 range of handsets have been well and truly cracked. Anyone that searches the Internet for a short period of time would be able to find an IMEI change solution. BUT Nokia's new DCT4 range of handsets remains un beaten with regards to changing the IMEI. This is largely down to the type of memory used to store the IMEI number. Nokia have chosen to use OTP (one time programmable) memory, which by its very name indicates that data cant be over written. (unless you change the UEMmemory chip - technically this is out of the realms of most criminals!)
The criminals do have an alternative to changing IMEI's, and this is to send the barred handsets overseas! The blacklist database (or CEIR) is only used by the UK networks. Therefore a handset that is barred in the UK will work fine in a different country! Apparently a large number of UK barred handsets find themselves in Italy, Spain and France etc.. The Barred handset works fine in any country outside the UK!!
The solution to this exporting problem is simple. Rather than a national database the mobile industry is now looking to build an international database. Ifwhen this is introduced blacklisted handsets will not work anywhere in the world! (The international database idea sounds good! But it does have obstacles to overcome, as many African networks claim that it would be too expensive to upgrade their equipment to support such a system)

Here are some Very Useful tips for all NOKIA phones.

Tip One
Do u know how to use the edit button (abc or pencil button)?Heres how... in the inbox for example; u wanna delete multiple sms, simply hold the edit button, scroll down, and then, press c to delete the marked sms. The edit button can also b used to copy and past text in sms, simply hold it and scroll across, choose copy. pretty good for placing song names in ngages

Tip Two
Shit happens, on a smartphone, its inevitable u do something wrong, and tis calls for a format of fone. to format the fone, press *#7370#, then enter the lock code, which is the sec code of the fone. NOTE: batt must b full, else if format is disrupted by low batt, consequences will b disatrousI heard the code *#7780# works too, pretty much the same i tink.for 6600 users, to format the fone, theres an alternative way. Press and hold <3>, <*> and Call (Send) buttons, then power on fone, keep holding on the 3 buttons, till u come to a format screen. this method ONLY works on 6600, and need not enter the sec code. BUT sec code would be reset to default 12345.

Tip Three
TO NGAGE USERS; Did u know u can install .sis files simply using the cable given? Juz plug it in, place the .sis file anywhere on e: (the mmc), not in any folders, root of e:, disconnect, then look for it in manager.Tip FourSave on battery and system memory being used by regulary checking the task manager which can be accessed by holding down the menu button!!
Tip 4a: Set the screen saver to a short time out period to prolong battery life.
Tip 4b:Avoid restarting the phone, or repeatedly turning it on and off. This helps increase battery life.

Tip 5
Type *#06# to display your IMEI serial number, very valuable for the unlocking your phone to other sim cards

Tip 6
Type *#0000# to view which firmware version you are running

Tip 7
If you would like to avoid being "blue jacked", keep bluetooth turned off, or set your phone's visibility to hidden.

Tip 8
Don't want to carry a watch and a phone? Set the screen saver to show date and time, then you can ditch the watch.

Tip 9
Save memory when installing apps, by installing over bluetooth. This can be done using the nokia phone suite and a bluetooth serial connection. Only works with .SIS files, so java still has to be sent to the phone, but will save space when using .SIS files.

Tip 10
Operator logosUse a filemanager like FExplorer or SeleQ to add the folders: "c:/system/Apps/phone/oplogo". Add a .bmp picture to folder "oplogo" and restart your phone! The .bmp picture size needs to be: 97 x 25 pixelsTip 11Check if the recepients phone is onDelivery reportsorType *0# your message in the message composer window space then write your message, the recipient will not see the star zero hash bit - just the message When they read it it will relay a message back to your fone showing the time they recieved it. (haven't yet tried it myself though)

BlueJackingFirst up, you need to know what Bluetooth is. There are lots of types of modern devices that incorporate Bluetooth as one of their many features. PDAs, mobile phones and laptops are a few of these modern devices. Bluetooth means that Bluetooth enabled devices can send things like phonebook/address book contacts, pictures & notes to other Bluetooth enabled devices wirelessly over a range of about 10 metres. So, we've got past the boring part. Now, using a phone with Bluetooth, you can create a phonebook contact and write a message, eg. 'Hello, you've been bluejacked', in the 'Name' field. Then you can search for other phones with Bluetooth and send that phonebook contact to them. On their phone, a message will popup saying "'Hello, you've been bluejacked' has just been received by Bluetooth" or something along those lines. For most 'victims' they will have no idea as to how the message appeared on their phone.

u can select all files in a folder by selecting THE folder and copy it then paste it somewhere. however u need to make a new directory. fexplorer wun let u copy that folder together. well seleQ can mark files to copy but it really takes time!

A soft and Hard resetA Soft-reset - the process of resetting all the settings of the phone to the factory default! No applications are deleted! A Hard-reset is like formatting a drive! It does format the memory. Everything that has been installed after the first use of the phone is deleted! It will recover the memory of the phone to the state you purchased it! It is done by inputing the following code: *#7370# NOTE: The battery must be full or the charger has to be connected to the phone so that it does not run out of power and make the phone unusable.

"Firmware" is the phone's operating system stored in internal Flash memory of the device (disk Z.Manufacturers release new firmware versions containing bug fixes, improvements and - sometimes - offering new functions.Firmware upgrade can only be made in authorized Nokia service centre (point).To check your current firmware version simply type *#0000# on main Phone screen.

Speed up ur Mobile

Try this trick to speed up ur mobile n say the result .This trick I found from the web, really speeds-up any* symbian mobile phone. First I thought this is a joke, but don't know how, it worked !!! It must be a secret code for Nokia. First change ur phone date to 03/04/2005 Go to Menu -> Office -> To-do List. Make a new to do note with following data : Subject : Speed Due date : 04/08/2005 Priority : High Press Done, but don't Exit. Now make another note with : Subject : Qoukie Due date : 04/08/2005 Priority : Low Press Done & Exit to Stand-By screen. Now go back again to To-do List. Then press "options" & "mark as done" ( Do this to the notes in the order above ) Exit & update the phone date.

* Easy Unlock: It allows you to choose the most convenient unlock combination for yourself and to decide whether to disable the default 'Unlock' + *. * Auto Lock Options: You can set a keypad auto lock period which prevents the phone from accidental calls. It is possible to choose the applications which deactivate the auto lock. If such application is open, the keyboard won't be locked.

* Security: Smart Settings allows you to change the max length of the Phone Lock Code. Normally it should be 5 digits long. But now you will be able to create more secure, up to 9 digits codes. For some S60 phones, there is a special 10 digits Master Security Code. It can be found in the Web and it unlocks the Phone even without the user defined Lock Code. With Smart Settings you can prevent using this code - codes longer than 9 digits won't be accepted by the phone.
